In 2021, the city hired the architectural firm Quinn Evans to develop a master plan study for the Sherwood Shopping Center, where the new library would anchor the development. It is not buildings that create memories, in my opinion, but the experiences that occur there. That said, I am certain that these beautiful mid-century libraries continue to serve as (at the very least) the setting for important events in many lives, and will for years to come.

The Design Library is proud of the depth, breadth, organization and continuing expansion of our archive. The scope of the archive collections, our vast reservoir of untapped designs and our constant new acquisitions mean that the Library is effectively a limitless resource. Across three hundred years of highly skilled creative work—mostly by anonymous artists—a marvelous assortment of designs has emerged. The Makers’ KUbe is designed by the architects at Bjarke Ingels as a monumental 50,000-square-foot structure built with mass timber. The diagrid frame, engineered by StructureCraft, utilizes tight-fit dowels and glulam beams to create a strong, all-wood structure. This approach minimizes carbon-intensive concrete and showcases traditional Japanese joinery techniques.

In fact, the room itself is a secret, as you enter through a door disguised as a bookshelf. Established in 1872, and one of the most massive libraries in the world, the Los Angeles Public Library system contains over 6,000,000 volumes. The iconic Goodhue building was constructed in 1926 and was the crowning achievement for architect Bertram Goodhue, who died at fifty in 1924.
Charles Follen McKim, of notable architectural firm McKim, Mead and White, was behind the design of this library, which is home to famed works by Charlotte Brontë, Lord Byron, and Charles Dickens, to name a few. Meyer’s newspaper, Ελληνικά Χρονικά (meaning Greek Chronicles) was Greece’s first newspaper, and it was financed by celebrated poet Lord Byron. Together, they advocated for Greece’s independence, which was granted in 1821, and 11 years later, the National Library of Greece was founded. By the 1960s, the original Central Library building suffered from serious overcrowding and physical deterioration. Both librarians and members of City Council began looking for solutions and many felt a new building was the answer.
